Les Remparts is an imposing 13th-century fortified stone house built on the edge of a medieval hilltop village. The stone walls are around one metre thick in places and some have been left unplastered to retain a feel of the medieval.
One of the living rooms has original arrow slits overlooking what would have been the moat, now the main courtyard which contains the heated marble swimming pool. There are also areas where the medieval colombage (half timbered and stone) has been restored such as in the large entrance hall, bedrooms and stair walls.
The floors are all sandstone and there is under-floor heating and excellent insulation throughout the whole house.
Les Remparts sleeps up to 18 people, with 8 double bedrooms and 2 single futons for children or young adults. The beds are handmade in oak and the rooms are all furnished with a mixture of French and English antiques, giving then an elegant and comfortable feel.
At your request, some double bedrooms can be changed to twin or triple. Four baby cots are also available.
There are 7 ensuite WC, shower/bathrooms and another shower/WC on the top floor as well as 3 further WCs on the ground and basement floors. The 8 bathrooms are all marble lined and individually designed.
There are two fully equipped kitchens, both with fridges, freezers, microwaves, dishwashers, stainless steel gas hobs, electric fan ovens and the larger kitchen also has a splendid gas fired scarlet Rayburn. The two kitchens are hand built in oak and provide plenty of cooking space.
There are two large sitting/dining rooms on the ground floor furnished with comfy sofas, rugs and large antique tables and chairs. They each have a large fireplace (wood provided) and French windows that open onto the two large stone flagged terraces that run the length of two sides of the house.
On the top floor there are two small sitting rooms/solars with full length patios doors opening onto the secluded south terrace.
The walled courtyard contains a marble lined swimming pool heated by solar power. It has a sliding roof which enables use of the pool all year round and the dimensions are 4.40m by 10.40m. Uniquely there is a shallow paved 'beach' area running along the length of one side perfect for paddling and, in one corner, a solar heated waterfall within a small grotto.
The whole area around the pool is paved in limestone, with lemon, orange and fig trees to create a tropical feel and has access to the rest of the house via the basement areas that contain the cinema and a small kitchen area with a WC and fridge/freezer.
Terraces & garden
There are two stone paved terraces on the first floor, that run around two sides of the house, one perfect for sunny breakfasts and the other for watching the sunset. There is also a terrace at the top of the building with a lovely view of the Pyrenees which gets lots of sun and is completely secluded.
All have wooden outside furniture such as steamers, tables, benches and canvas parasols. There are also two pretty little gardens in the outer courtyard together with several parking spaces.
There is a cinema in the basement seating 16 people and has a huge collection of DVDs to suit every taste. There is also an English channel TV.
The house is equipped with wireless internet and is iPod friendly with various speaker systems around the house. There is also excellent sound proofing between the rooms.
There is a fully equipped laundry in the basement with a washing machine and a tumble drier.
